King Abdulaziz Port (Dammam): importer's guide

King Abdulaziz Port (ميناء الملك عبدالعزيز) in Dammam is the largest Saudi port on the Arabian Gulf and the second-busiest container port in the Kingdom. It is the natural gateway for the Eastern Province and — thanks to a direct rail link to Riyadh Dry Port — for the capital itself. Clearance via ZATCA/FASAH takes 1–3 working days.

When is Dammam the right port?

Choose Dammam when the cargo's destination is Riyadh, the Eastern Province (Dammam, Khobar, Jubail) or the northern industrial cities. Cargo from Asia reaches the Gulf side without transiting the Red Sea, and containers can move to Riyadh by rail under customs seal and clear at Riyadh Dry Port — often cheaper and more predictable than trucking from Jeddah.

How does the Riyadh Dry Port rail option work?

Containers discharged at Dammam are loaded onto Saudi Railways trains and cleared at the dry port inside Riyadh. The bill of lading must be consigned accordingly. For high-volume Riyadh importers this removes 400 km of trucking per box and decongests delivery scheduling.

What does clearance at Dammam involve?

The same FASAH/ZATCA process as all Saudi ports: electronic declaration with invoice, packing list, B/L, origin certificate and SABER; risk-lane assignment; duty at mostly 5% plus 15% VAT; release. Industrial and petrochemical-related imports are a large share of Dammam traffic, so machinery HS classification expertise matters here more than anywhere.
