Buying a shipping container in Saudi Arabia

Indicative Saudi market prices: a new ("one-trip") 20ft container ~$2,500–4,000, a used cargo-worthy 20ft ~$1,200–2,500, 40ft units roughly 30–60% more, high-cubes at a premium — plus delivery (SAR 500–2,000+ by distance, plus crane/sideloader if you have no forklift). Supply concentrates around Jeddah and Dammam ports where empties accumulate. The grade system and the CSC plate matter more than the paint: they decide whether the box can ship again or only store.

Grades and what they are actually for

• One-trip — built in Asia, sailed once loaded; effectively new. For conversions (cafes, offices) and long-life storage where appearance counts
• Cargo-worthy (CW) — certified fit for shipping: sound structure, working doors, valid CSC plate. The grade to insist on if the box will ever carry cargo internationally
• Wind & watertight (WWT) — no active leaks, but not certified for shipping; the storage workhorse
• As-is — cheapest, sold with defects; only for scrap-adjacent uses

For shipping use, the CSC safety plate with a current inspection/ACEP scheme is non-negotiable — carriers will refuse a box without it.

Inspection checklist before paying

• Roof from above — dents pool water and rust through first
• Floor — intact hardwood, no chemical spill stains or soft patches
• Doors — both open/close by one person, seals uncracked
• Light test — closed doors at midday: any daylight inside is a hole
• Corner castings and understructure — the structure lives there, not in the panels
• Smell — previous chemical or hide cargo announces itself

Buy, or not buy: the alternatives

For one-off relocations or projects, buying often loses to alternatives: shipper-owned container (SOC) deals where you buy cheap at origin and sell at destination, leasing for temporary storage needs, or simply carrier equipment included in freight.
