Sea freight to Saudi Arabia: how it works

Sea freight carries the large majority of Saudi imports. Cargo arrives at Jeddah Islamic Port (Red Sea, serving the west and centre) or King Abdulaziz Port Dammam (Gulf, serving the east and Riyadh). Transit: UAE 2–4 days, India 10–18, Europe 14–22, China 18–35. Clearance adds 1–3 working days when SABER certificates are ready.

FCL or LCL — how do I choose?

FCL (your own 20ft/40ft container) suits loads above roughly 12–15 CBM: flat price per box, faster clearance, no co-loaders. LCL (shared container, billed per CBM) suits smaller consignments but adds consolidation time at both ends and your release can wait on other shippers' documents. For fragile or high-value cargo, FCL is worth it even half-empty.

Which port should my cargo route to?

Route to the port nearest the goods' final destination: Jeddah for the Western region and most consumer distribution, Dammam for the Eastern Province and often for Riyadh (with rail and truck links), and Riyadh Dry Port for containers railed inland under customs seal from Dammam. Sending a Riyadh-bound container to the wrong coast can add SAR 2,000+ of trucking.

What does the sea import process look like?

• Arrival: delivery order from the line, declaration filed in FASAH
• ZATCA assessment, possible inspection, duty + VAT payment
• Release and trucking to your warehouse
