What does OEM mean — and how OEM buying works
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) is a factory that produces goods to another company's specification, sold under that company's brand — the model behind most private-label products on the market. Two neighbouring terms: ODM (the factory designs the product, you brand it) and aftermarket (parts compatible with, but not made for, the original). For importers the label matters legally: branding, certification and customs treatment all follow from who owns the design and the trademark.
OEM vs ODM vs aftermarket — which model are you buying?
- OEM: your design/spec, factory produces, your brand — you own the product file and the responsibility for it
- ODM ("white label"): factory's existing design, your logo — fastest to market, weakest exclusivity
- Aftermarket: independent parts fitting branded equipment — legal, but marketing them with the original brand's name has strict limits
In spare parts, "OEM quality" on a listing is a marketing claim, not a certification — the invoice and the trademark on the goods are what customs and trademark owners look at.
What should an OEM buyer control at the factory?
Three files decide OEM quality: the specification (materials, tolerances, packaging — in writing, versioned), the golden sample (sealed reference both sides sign), and inspection (pre-production check plus pre-shipment inspection against the spec, typically $200–400 per man-day in China). Skipping the golden sample is the classic root cause of "the second order was different".
